The Bristol Herald-Courier reports that the University of Virginia's College at Wise will not host another mixed martial arts event after a cage fight earlier this month resulted in several injuries and sent one fighter to a hospital.
No one was seriously injured in the April 5 amateur event, organized by a Wise-based fight promoter and the university's athletic booster club. The fight drew more than 600 people to the Fred B. Greear Gymnasium, and garnered $3,000 in ticket and concessions sales for the college's general athletic fund.
"We will not host another mixed martial arts event, or cage fight, on campus," Roger Hagy, a university spokesman, said on Tuesday when the Herald Courier inquired about the event.
Hagy declined to elaborate on why the university had cooled to the combat sport. Calls to the University of Virginia in Charlottesville on Tuesday were not returned.
According to a fight promoter and the organization that sanctioned the event, fighter Adam Bentley was carried out on a stretcher and taken to Mountain View Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for dehydration and exhaustion. Another fighter received stitches for a cut above his eye, and two others suffered dislocated elbows.
The Arena, the fight promoter, took out an insurance policy for the event, and Hagy said the university was not liable.
A sportswriter for the college newspaper who covered the event described Bentley exiting the cage and collapsing "to the floor as blood spilled from his mouth," before being taken to the hospital.
